Bunkers, Breathtaking Views, and Pizzas: My Albanian Adventure

Albania, a country in Europe that doesn’t quite fit the typical European mold, yet still manages to surprise with its unique charm. My journey began in the capital city of Tirana, where I found plenty of reasons to enjoy. An Indian friend joined me in the hostel for a conversation. I later went for a day of exploration, starting with a walking tour that unveiled the city’s hidden gems. I wandered through the vibrant city center, stumbled upon a dictator’s bunker-turned-museum, ‘Bunk Art,’ which took us back in time to the grim days of the Cold War and world wars, and took in sweeping city views from a thrilling cable car ride.
I also ventured into the culinary landscape, savoring local dishes, and unexpectedly found one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. A highlight was the Dajti Express, a mountain excursion that offered breathtaking views and a memorable hiking trip. According to our guide, Albania is preparing to welcome more tourists in the near future, but for now, they are on a journey of recovering from political and economic instability while aiming to become a more prosperous nation. The city center may be a bit pricey, but exploring its outer regions reveals a more affordable and equally rewarding experience.
Albania may not be what one typically expects from a European destination, but that is exactly what makes it intriguing and worth exploring.
